With an out of the box vision and a fruitful experience in the office design industry, she has always managed to find an ingenious solution to every client’s request. She is leading AMA Design, a team of young architects specialised in office design, who, through their creativity and professionalism, have been skilfully transforming any space into an AMAzing workplace. They are true leaders in the industry, so we are honoured to present you such an #AMAzing interview with none other than their leading architect.[/heading][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/4" offset="vc_col-sm-offset-0 vc_col-xs-1"][vc_single_image image="11244" img_size="400x250" alignment="center" style="vc_box_rounded" onclick="link_image"][/vc_column][vc_column width="3/4" offset="vc_col-sm-offset-0 vc_col-xs-1"][vc_column_text]The evolution of office design in Romania is, without a doubt, marked by AMA Design projects. What is the secret for an outstanding portfolio?[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]We always think at the end users of each space: what they need on their daily basis, what is the spirit or the culture of their teams. Therefore, it’s not only about fulfilling the requirements of the management team which is in charge with the development of the project, but mostly about creating a workplace that is well designed and perfectly organized for the people that will actually use that space. This is a very important aspect, as we spend a lot of time at the beginning of each project trying to understand the needs of each department and hear their voice, by asking specific questions that truly define our scope of work.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width="stretch_row" css=".vc_custom_1585921599747{background-color: #ededed !important;}"][vc_column width="1/4"][vc_single_image image="11247" img_size="400x250" alignment="center" style="vc_box_rounded" onclick="link_image"][/vc_column][vc_column width="3/4" offset="vc_col-sm-offset-0"][vc_column_text]What was the concept philosophy for Playtika Offices?[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The space is filled with themed meeting rooms, informal areas and cafeterias, which are all inspired by Playtika’s best video games. Each floor has a large space in the middle of the workplace that is designed for multipurpose use, such as informal work, socializing, relaxing, or used for having open meetings and short brainstorming sessions. Thus, the space has vivid colours and special custom lighting fixtures that were designed exclusively for this project.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/4"][vc_single_image image="11246" img_size="400x250" alignment="center" style="vc_box_rounded" onclick="link_image"][/vc_column][vc_column width="3/4"][vc_column_text]Who in the "community" do you follow and admire for their architectural ability and why?[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]We are looking for the latest researches in workplace design and the evolution of each component that makes an office, a great workplace. Our goal was to design a dynamic space with many collaborative areas where people can interact and work at the same time. For the common areas we have adopted a modern-industrial approach with opened ceilings but with specific acoustic elements and cozy furniture.  The warm and colorfully textured office provides the employees a homey and comfortable atmosphere to work in.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_icon type="openiconic" icon_openiconic="vc-oi vc-oi-help" color="orange" background_style="rounded" align="right"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_column_text]What was the most challenging part in developing this project? The solution was to implement innovative acoustic solutions into the ceilings, sound absorbing, in order to reduce the noise level. These elements have been designed as decorative objects, some with integrated lights, complementing the design features of the space.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_icon type="openiconic" icon_openiconic="vc-oi vc-oi-help" color="orange" background_style="rounded" align="right"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_column_text]What are your thoughts on the importance of floor coverings in interior design today?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]The floor coverings are key materials in the interior design, enhancing the individuality and personality of the space. In a discreet but nonetheless efficient way. Branding is surprisingly often interpreted as a bold wall-to-wall graphic representation of the typographic branding manual whereas branding is much more than that and, above all, not that. Over branding is a common disease in nowadays offices as there is a tendency to literally confound graphic identity with interior design or architecture. Of course, as it is very first hand, one is tempted to buy carpet, for instance, in the colours of the company logo for instance or to paint the walls likewise. Studies show that employees get irritated by such practices and instead of embracing the culture of the company tend to reject it as it feels intruding and patronizing. NN is a well-established company with a more than 100 years history, a strong company culture and NN employees are really proud of being part of it so, together with the board we got to the conclusion that the interior design should express the values of the company in discreet and refined way. The restraint color palette (basically just grey) with only little touches of orange speak about the Dutch origin of the company as well as about efficiency and no-nonsense approach and the natural materials (natural ash veneer and massive ash elements) are enhancing the well-being and appeal to the sense of touch.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_icon type="openiconic" icon_openiconic="vc-oi vc-oi-help" color="orange" background_style="rounded" align="right"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_column_text]Could you tell us more about the architectural concept?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]Through this re-design NN went from a classical workplace to the "shared desk" typology, which involves a very democratic approach to the layout. One of our proposals in order to enhance this idea was to have an "agora" right in the centre of the floor, as the ones in the Greek ancient cities which functions as a hub, as a non-bookable ad-hoc meeting room (first come-first served), town hall or simply as alternative working place.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_icon type="openiconic" icon_openiconic="vc-oi vc-oi-help" color="orange" background_style="rounded" align="right"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_column_text]What are some current trends you’re seeing when it comes to office design?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]For a few years one obvious one is the "homey office". That is, obviously, an office that looks and perhaps feels like home... While I think it's a welcomed change from the "Playground" office, I guess we should be moderate with it as one of the reasons behind this trend is to blur the line between home and office hence to spend more time at work. We, as humans though, function in cycles: day/night, workdays, weekends, seasons, etc. Blurring the lines between those cycles might be productive in the short term but surprisingly unproductive in the long term. Another quite recent trend is the "biophilic" design. While there's nothing wrong with recalling nature in the office environment, if it's done by means of plastic plants, primitive patterns, "green walls" which are in truth dead lichens, for instance, it can be quite damaging and throwing into derision the idea of nature.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_icon type="openiconic" icon_openiconic="vc-oi vc-oi-help" color="orange" background_style="rounded" align="right"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_column_text]How does interior design enhance performance, health and wellness on employees? So, I could say that my first job consisted in everything that might cross your mind related to architecture. My first important job I had 1 year later, when I started to work for a German architecture studio based in Bucharest. That was the first time when I started to realize what being an architect really required. The projects were diverse, from small family houses to hospitals, for both Romania and Germany. I eagerly intended to be part in all of the projects that were at that time in the office.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_icon type="openiconic" icon_openiconic="vc-oi vc-oi-help" color="orange" background_style="rounded" align="right"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_column_text]If someone were to write a book about your architecture career, what would be its title?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]If the book is to be published nowadays, I would say: “A lot more to come…Stay Tuned! 😊”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_icon type="openiconic" icon_openiconic="vc-oi vc-oi-help" color="orange" background_style="rounded" align="right"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_column_text]Do you have a signature style?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]I could say that all of our projects, not necessarily only the office ones, have a distinctive design that we intend to implement in order to create an individual personality of the space or building that we imagine. If I would highlight the first 3 criteria that merge in HTO’s project I would say:
  • Functionality – Form follows function
  • Quality – we always push the client to implement as much as the budget allows quality rated materials and systems
  • Timeless design – we try not to always “to be in trend” …. contemporary design rules and highlights, especially in the office projects, have the particularise that could result in not such a particular project.

How did you handle it?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]The time frame of the project was the most difficult part of the project. If we put aside all of the client’s requirements in terms of functionality and design (which I might point out that we successfully achieved 😊) the fact that the Architectural Project was appointed in late August 2018 and Concept approved in late September 2018 and the fact the entire 8.000 sqm had to be implemented by the 1st of May was pretty challenging. We were aware  from the begging of the project of the tight schedule, and the solution that we presented to the client, solution that we believe was the only possible way to deliver, consisted in developing the project only using systems (partitions, furniture, flooring, etc.) that came from worldwide renowned brands and, beside the quality and design specification had the advantage of a very short required implementation time.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_icon type="openiconic" icon_openiconic="vc-oi vc-oi-help" color="orange" background_style="rounded" align="right"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_column_text]What are your thoughts on the importance of floor coverings in interior design today?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]Floor coverings are very big part of the project…any project. It’s a large surface that you interact with on day to day basics. In terms of design, the proper use of it should complement your ideas and add value to the entire project. Otherwise, you could simply ruin it. In terms of functionality, the importance of floor coverings has a huge impact in comfort and maintenance. We, architects and designers, have a key role in expressing the values of a brand. The first meetings between every client and BL Associates team are also focused on our understanding of the values and principles that guide and activates that client. All these values will be used to create all aspects of design, to determine what experience have in that space the team members, the customers or the visitors.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_icon type="openiconic" icon_openiconic="vc-oi vc-oi-help" color="orange" background_style="rounded" align="right"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_column_text]Tell us more about the functionality of the space.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]Regarding the Learning Center of Banca Transilvania, BL Associates developed a complex project, which had to incorporate, in a welcoming and functional framework, both office and learning features, but also with functionalities for relaxing, socializing and knowledge.   Situated in the North of Bucharest and designed for conferences, seminars and workshops, it has 828 sqm and is made up of auditorium, 6 training rooms, a networking and a relaxing space.   The auditorium has the largest area (160 Sqm) and was designed for a capacity of 120 people. This space is equipped with modern and functional furniture (chairs and desks) made through innovative techniques as practical, foldable and easy to store pieces.   The training rooms, each with a capacity of 16 people, designed for different events (conferences, workshops, courses) benefit from the functionality including also wardrobes for clothes, which give a comforting feeling of familiarity and coziness.   An eye-catching visual point is the art sculpture, colorful wallpaper full of motivational messages and graphics that urge you to a “keep going no matter what”. This is the message BL Associates wants to convey through this project, an indulgence in competitiveness and education. The whole design and furniture have been adapted to this effect. Office furniture has been used simple but effective, easy-to-operate pieces, so that these spaces can be configurable, modular.   After intense work, the reward also follows, that's why BLA project for Banca Transilvania integrates a "coffee & snack area". A cafeteria and a lounge area welcome you in color tones, warm lighting and social-friendly furniture.  Modern coffee tables, red comfortable sofas and the audio system for ambiently music give the feeling of relaxation and “privacy”.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_icon type="openiconic" icon_openiconic="vc-oi vc-oi-help" color="orange" background_style="rounded" align="right"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_column_text]What are your thoughts on the importance of floor coverings in interior design today? Can you tell us more about this?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]The user experience is a set of activating senses and perceptions regarding the environment. Now we are at a turning point, given the requests for more eco-friendly buildings that integrate technology and life cycle assessment schemes. Also the organisation in office buildings is changing, we are evolving from hierarchical schemes to more flexible ones, given the job changes and the shift to working remote.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_icon type="openiconic" icon_openiconic="vc-oi vc-oi-help" color="orange" background_style="rounded" align="right"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_column_text]Are you concerned about environmental and social sustainability in your buildings? If so, what role does green building play into your work?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]We are very much concerned regarding environmental and social sustainability. We apply this schemes in designing the concept of the building. Good sustainable design also encourages others to build the same way, it becomes a trend in nowadays society. People are more aware of their impact to the environment. The building service equipments have to be of high equality in order to reduce costs of living and working, the position of the building and its relationship with the sun can reduce also utility costs. You have to understand the site and what advantages it brings into your design for a good planning.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_icon type="openiconic" icon_openiconic="vc-oi vc-oi-help" color="orange" background_style="rounded" align="right"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_column_text]What do you feel is the greatest challenge when it comes to designing for environmental sustainability?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]The biggest challenge is the cost for implementing high quality equipments or architectural systems like sunshades, that reduce this costs. We started a lot of projects aiming for BREEAM or LEED certificates and when the client discovered the costs, they prefer to go with a more conservative building. The talent of the architect should be to try and balance the cost and the need for green architecture.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_raw_html]JTNDc3R5bGUlM0UlMEEucG9zdC5zdHlsZS0yJTIwaGVhZGVyJTJDJTIwYm9keSUyMCUzRSUyMGRpdi5zaXRlLXdyYXBwZXIlMjAlM0UlMjBzZWN0aW9uJTIwJTNFJTIwZGl2JTIwJTNFJTIwZGl2JTIwJTNFJTIwZGl2JTIwJTNFJTIwcCUyMCU3QmRpc3BsYXklM0ElMjBub25lJTNCJTIwdmlzaWJpbGl0eSUzQSUyMGhpZGRlbiUzQiU3RCUwQSUzQyUyRnN0eWxlJTNFJTBB[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The restaurant is located at 130 meters above the ground and we faced several challenges in finishing the design work. As we were dealing with an extremely tall and a one-of-a-kind building in Bucharest, safety and construction regulations were strict. What made this products to stand out from the crowd?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]Two by Trickshot is the second project of an entertainment concept which gathers under the same brand a restaurant with an open kitchen, a coffee place, bowling alley, pool and darts games. We created the first Trickshot concept in 2014 and now we got to do a spinoff for a new place. The main idea of the brand is to have all these diverse functions blended together. We didn’t want to have functions separated, because this was neither a classic restaurant, nor a classic bowling alley. We “tricked” the consumer into having dinner next to the bowling lanes. Two by Trickshot builds on this idea and adds a more industrial touch, suited to the area of the city.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_icon type="openiconic" icon_openiconic="vc-oi vc-oi-help" color="orange" background_style="rounded" align="right"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_column_text]Tell us more about the architectural concept of Two by Trickshot.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]For Two by Trickshot we used LVT tiles from Gerflor for the restaurant area and Milliken carpet for the bowling and pool area. We wanted a stone-like finishing for the restaurant area, a neutral aspect, but also a functional product. Restaurants are very busy and natural stone ore raising tend to wear off. Another advantage was installation times, which were much faster than anything else. We wanted to use a Watercolour collection from Milliken to have a floor that is comfortable, non-linear and sound absorbent, for the bowling and pool areas.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_icon type="openiconic" icon_openiconic="vc-oi vc-oi-help" color="orange" background_style="rounded" align="right"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_column_text]What are some current trends you’re seeing when it comes to hospitality?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]Hospitality is for us a fast-pace industry. The restaurants that were cool last year may easily be forgotten and new concepts seem to emerge every week. We see the industrial interior design at a peak, but new trends like 40s and 60s influences are starting to emerge.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_icon type="openiconic" icon_openiconic="vc-oi vc-oi-help" color="orange" background_style="rounded" align="right"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/6"][vc_column_text]What are your thoughts on the importance of floor coverings in interior design today?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]We used flooring in two ways: either to reinforce an idea or to highlight an area of the space, or as a blending surface that satisfies technical usage. We look at the acoustics of the material, resistance in time and overall costs.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_raw_html]JTNDc3R5bGUlM0UlMEEucG9zdC5zdHlsZS0yJTIwaGVhZGVyJTJDJTIwYm9keSUyMCUzRSUyMGRpdi5zaXRlLXdyYXBwZXIlMjAlM0UlMjBzZWN0aW9uJTIwJTNFJTIwZGl2JTIwJTNFJTIwZGl2JTIwJTNFJTIwZGl2JTIwJTNFJTIwcCUyMCU3QmRpc3BsYXklM0ElMjBub25lJTNCJTIwdmlzaWJpbGl0eSUzQSUyMGhpZGRlbiUzQiU3RCUwQSUzQyUyRnN0eWxlJTNFJTBB[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row]
